Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if the crews have missed my bin/box?

If your recycling box or bin was been presented from 7am on your collection day and has not been emptied, please contact us and we will re-visit and collect the bin/box by the end of the next working day.

Where can I get a net for my box?

Every box should be delivered with a net, which ties onto one side of the box and fits over the top to prevent items from blowing out on blustery days. If you require a net please contact us.

I recycle a lot but can't fit everything into my box?

If you find that your box is not big enough for the amount of recyclables that you produce weekly, you can order an additional box.

I have had a party and I have extra recycling this week, what do I do with the extras?

If you have the occasional extra recyclables, you can put these into a carrier bag and leave them next to or on top of your recycling box. Once emptied, the carrier bag will be left in your box for you to dispose of.

I require a larger bin, how do I get one?

To request a larger bin, please contact us. The request will come through to a member of Waste Management Team who will look into whether you are entitled to a larger bin.

REMEMBER - recycling through the green box will give you more space in your bin.

Why was the green bag service stopped?

Green bags often contained non-recyclable items (e.g. food waste) that would contaminate all the clean, correct material. This resulted in the whole of the green bag waste going as refuse rather than recycling.

The kerbside boxes are sorted at the side of the vehicle so any incorrect items can be left behind in the box, making residents aware of what is or is not accepted.

On the green bag service, I was able to recycle tins and cardboard. Why does the kerbside box not accept these materials?

As Leicester is a city, there is a large percent of terraced housing and many residents do not have the space to store several different containers for recycling, plus this would cause obstructions on the pavements. Therefore, the kerbside box was chosen as a suitable container as they are easy to store and don't cause huge obstructions when presented on pavements.

However, Leicester City is unique in having a Recycling Plant that can process and divert up to 70% of the waste from wheelie bins. Once the wheelie bin waste is collected, it is brought up to Leicester's Recycling Plant, tipped and processed through the ball mill. This technology is able to extract all metals, kitchen waste, cardboard and other light material directly from the wheelie bin, so there is no need to collect these items separately through the kerbside service.
